Countryside COP Cefn gwlad returns

Countryside COP (COP Cefn gwlad) returns for its second year. Running from 10-14 October, it’s an opportunity for farmers and rural communities to discuss opportunities to improve sustainability within the industry.

As part of the week-long event, NFU Cymru has worked with its next generation of farmers to show the work already being taken on farm and how everyone can become a climate hero.

The impact of climate change

NFU Cymru President Aled Jones said: “We are all already seeing and experiencing the impacts of climate change and it is the next generation of farmers who are likely to see these impacts even more keenly in the years to come. This is why we must continue to make the industry as sustainable as possible and strive to reach our net zero target by 2040.

“Countryside COP is a great opportunity to showcase the contribution our industry is already making to help increase biodiversity, use clean energy and capture carbon in the atmosphere and it’s also an opportunity to identify where we can do more.

Favourable policies

“Here in Wales, we have the natural resources to produce high quality, nutritious, affordable, climate-friendly food and we already produce some of the most sustainable food in the world. But we must have favourable policies in place and investment into the industry to allow this to happen.”

Countryside COP is hosted by the Agriculture & Land Use Alliance, of which the union is a member. Their week of organised virtual events will bring together rural businesses, organisation and experts in a series of seminars covering key issues from science and innovation to food systems and will explore future opportunities and climate adaptation options.

Programme of events

NFU Cymru urges all those interested in the countryside to come together to discuss the key issues around climate change and the future vision of the rural economy. The schedule of virtual events can be found here.

NFU Cymru’s video will be launched across NFU Cymru’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) on Monday (10 October).
