NFU Cymru & NFU Mutual announce winner of 2026 Dairy Stockperson of the Year Award

20 Hydref 2026

Pembrokeshire stockman Geraint Jones, who works at Bowett Farm, Hundleton has been announced as the winner of the 2026 NFU Cymru / NFU Mutual Dairy Stockperson of the Year Award at today’s Welsh Dairy Show in Nantyci, Carmarthenshire.

The competition, now in its 13th year, recognises the important contribution a good dairy stockperson can make to a dairy enterprise, as well as the wider Welsh dairy industry.

During a presentation at the Welsh Dairy Show today (Tuesday 20 October), Geraint was presented with the top prize of £500 and a Welsh slate engraved cheese board.
NFU Cymru Dairy Board Chair Jonathan Wilkinson, who judged this year’s award, said:

“I would like to congratulate Geraint on winning this coveted prize. He is a dedicated and progressive stockman who puts animal health at the forefront of everything he does.

Great herd management and leadership skills

“Since taking the position at Bowett Farm almost six years ago, Geraint has demonstrated great herd management and leadership skills, taking a particular interest in the health of the herd. He has introduced a programme to increase animal fertility and animal health improvements through AI and his knowledge on genetic selection, which in turn has led to an increase in conception rates.

They have also seen a decrease in lameness and mastitis throughout the herd, as well as a significant reduction in the mortality rate. He has also introduced a programme to genetically test calves to enhance performance and efficiency.

“His passion and positivity for the future of the dairy industry here in Wales, as well as the care of the stock, all while being an employee at Bowett Farm, meant he stood out during the judging process.”

Intergrated in the local community

NFU Cymru Vice Dairy Board Chair, Martin Griffiths, who also joined the judging panel this year, said: “Geraint works closely with a nutritionist to ensure all animal dietary requirements are formulated to the highest standard. All grass is home grown and quality feed, high in protein to balance out the maize, which is again grown on farm, is fed to the stock. In taking time to think about the herd’s diets, he is improving cow health with the food they eat.

“He also has a great relationship with the local community and often welcomes school visits and local YFC groups to the farm.” Mr Griffiths added: “I’d also like to pay tribute to all of the farms we visited this year.

High standard of entries

The standard of entries was excellent and it is extremely encouraging to see the passion, care and drive that there is for the continuation of a successful dairy industry here in Wales. Well done to all who were shortlisted.”

Dorian Williams, NFU Cymru / NFU Mutual Group Secretary said: “There are some fantastic people working within the dairy industry here in Wales and Geraint is testament to the high calibre of dairy stockperson we are lucky to have producing milk for us.

He has a superb range of skills and is very passionate about wanting to take the business forward in terms of milk production and efficiency.

“Geraint represents the very best of dairy farming in Wales and is hardworking, committed, passionate about the industry and has created a productive and efficient farming system.”
