Welsh Farming Community Health Research - Healthwise Wales Study

Farming communities are an essential part of Wales. Improving our understanding of the challenges farmers face in Wales, as well as the strengths and resources they draw onto, is important for the future of rural Wales.

Public Health Wales writes…

We need your input to help empower and support our farming families.

Public Health Wales and Cardiff University need your input so we can better understand how to support our agricultural communities in Wales. We want to encourage Welsh farmers, farming family members, and agricultural workers to take part in our research to find new and better ways to improve the health and wellbeing of the Welsh farming community.

Mr Jack Evershed, farmer and chair of Rural Health and Care Wales reflected:

“As a farming community we have a strong tradition of giving our neighbours practical physical help, like lending a hand or a tractor, when we see they need that help. It would be great if we could become equally adept and competent at identifying emotional or psychological problems and knowing the appropriate response. This research is an opportunity for farmers and their families to contribute with valuable data that will help identify how the farming community can be supported to achieve this.”

HealthWise Wales is a national health study unique to Wales, and 30,000 Welsh people are already taking part. The unique element of the HealthWise Wales farmer’s research at Cardiff University is that it will recruit Welsh farmers, farming family members, and agricultural workers aged 16 and over to sign up to the study. When you sign up you will be asked to complete health and lifestyle questionnaires online or over the phone. Your information will provide valuable data to support the improvement of the health and wellbeing of the farming population.

Dr Alisha Davies, Head of Research and Evaluation, Public Health Wales reflected:

“Taking part in the HealthWise Wales study provides a wonderful opportunity for the farming communities in Wales to help inform key health needs and help shape health services for the farming community. We hope to create a partnership between the researchers and the farming community, where everyone can be an active and equal contributor.”
