Puffin Produce based in Haverfordwest, processes around 70,000 tonnes of potatoes each year. Members heard how ongoing investment in state-of-the-art facilities has helped position the business as a major player in the UK fresh produce sector. The site currently employs around 250 people, with the workforce increasing during peak periods such as Christmas.
A key focus of the tour was the strength of the local supply chain. The majority of potatoes processed at Puffin Produce are grown in Pembrokeshire, with 20 to 25 Welsh farm businesses supplying the factory annually. As well as potatoes the company also grows and packs leaks, further strengthening its contribution to Welsh horticulture.
Members were able to see first-hand how the business works closely with growers to maintain high standards of quality, traceability and sustainability. Puffin Produce supplies major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda and Co-op, ensuring that fresh Welsh produce reaches consumers across the UK.
Joining the visit was Jamie Burrows, NFU National Combinable Crops Board Chair, who provided an update on the work taking place at national level on behalf of cropping businesses. Jamie discussed some of the ongoing pressures facing the sector, including challenging input costs, market volatility and the need to secure a fair return for farmers. He also highlighted key opportunities encouraging growers to remain confident about the future of UK arable production.
Members commented on how valuable it was to see such a successful example of agri-food collaboration in Wales and welcomed the chance to discuss sector priorities directly with Jamie.
The visit provided a positive reminder of the importance of food production to Pembrokeshire's economy and a strong connection between farm businesses and Welsh consumers.
