Changes to UK-EU trade in plants and plant products from 1 January 2021

Coronavirus picture package

Regardless of the outcome of the UK-EU negotiations, once the transition period ends there will be new processes for the trade of plants and plant products between the United Kingdom and the European Union.

These include new import and export controls for plants and plant products between the UK and the EU, such as the use of Phytosanitary Certificates and other SPS checks, as well as new restrictions on the export of some products to the EU.

To help ease the transition the new import requirements will be introduced in stages with all new processes expected to be fully operational by 1 July 2021. All export requirements will come into force on 1 January 2021.

There will also be changes to the internal movements of goods within the UK including between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
