Cambrian Mountains Lamb awarded UK GI Status

Cambrian Mountains Lamb is the second new Welsh product to be awarded the highly sought after UK Geographical Indication (UK GI) status, hot on the heels of Gower Salt Marsh Lamb which won the accolade last month.

NFU Cymru Livestock Board Chairman Wyn Evans said:

“We are thrilled that the distinctive qualities of Cambrian Mountains Lamb have been recognised with the award of the new UK GI status. This is fantastic news for lamb producers in the area, who are rightly proud of this fine product that their families have reared in the Cambrian Mountains for generations.

“It is great to see a second iconic Welsh product bestowed with the new UK GI status so soon after Gower Salt Marsh Lamb secured the accreditation earlier this year. As Welsh farmers look to access new markets these new UK geographical indicators, sitting alongside our more longstanding GIs, will have an important role to play in ensuring that these Welsh products are recognised for their taste, quality and the carbon-friendly way in which they are produced. Ensuring that these products receive protection in any future trade deal should be a priority for the UK Government, so consumers can enjoy authentic Welsh and British products with confidence.”
