The week-long campaign, now in its fourth year, is an opportunity for NFU Cymru to channel its lobbying power to reach influential decision makers. These include politicians, industry stakeholders, the consumers of today as well as the consumers of tomorrow.
John Mercer, NFU Cymru Director said: “There is no getting away from the fact that Welsh farming is facing significant challenges at present and has done so for some time. While the devastating impacts of the family farm tax have dominated headlines, farmers are also grappling with a number of punitive policies which are having real impact on the viability of farming businesses.
"The aim of this week is to remind politicians, stakeholders and the public of the importance of Welsh food and farming – an industry which delivers growth and benefits not only for those living rurally, but for the whole of Wales. It is the cornerstone of the food foundation sector in Wales which has a turnover of £9.3 billion and employs 228,500 people – around 17% of Wales’ workforce.
“We want to spread positive messaging about our role in feeding the nation with healthy, climate friendly food, while enhancing the environment and ensuring prosperous rural communities.”
What's on
Lobbying politicians
NFU Cymru has organised an event at the Senedd to engage with politicians and set out our policy asks through the launch of our manifesto, ahead of the Senedd elections next year.
Engaging with local stakeholders
Events are taking place across Wales to engage with local stakeholders and raise issues impacting farmers and rural communities.
Connecting with consumers
Following the success of last year’s engagement day in the centre of Cardiff, the union is once again taking the farming message to an urban audience – this time in North Wales.
Educating the next generation
Finally, Cows on Tour will be back on the road, heading to an inner city school to educate the consumers of tomorrow on the importance of buying local, seasonal produce. It will also be a day to showcase all the work farmers do on farm while demonstrating the exciting career opportunities within the industry.
