UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Mexico

In May, the UK launched negotiations for a new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Mexico. The new deal will replace the UK-Mexico Trade Continuity Agreement (TCA) which rolled over the terms of trade which governed bilateral relations prior to Brexit when the UK was still a member of the EU.

While the TCA has helped foster a fruitful trading relationship between the UK and Mexico worth close to £4 billion a year, the scope of the agreement with regards to facilitating agricultural exports is limited – offering tariff -free access for just 62% of traded agricultural products. As such, agricultural trade is modest. But as the government looks to upgrade its trade partnership with Mexico, the NFU is optimistic about the role that British food and drink exports can play.
