Over 300 farmers from across Wales attended the NFU Cymru and Wynnstay Sustainable Farming and Grassland Management event at Blaenbwch Farm on Wednesday 21 October.

The event provided farmers with the opportunity to hear from industry experts on a range of topics, including herbal leys, grassland management, soil health, sheep dipping, pesticides and support available through the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS).

Valuable insights

Attendees received practical advice and the latest industry guidance to help improve productivity, environmental performance and business resilience, while gaining valuable insight into the requirements of the SFS.

Stella Owen, NFU Cymru's County Adviser for Brecon & Radnor and Monmouthshire, provided an overview of the SFS dashboard process, outlining available support and practical tools to help farmers complete the 2026 scheme requirements.

Farmers also took part in a farm tour, where Bryn Hughes and Amy Watts from Wynnstay Group Plc discussed the benefits of incorporating herbal leys into grazing systems, highlighting how selecting the right seed mixtures can improve soil health, increase drought resilience and boost livestock performance.

Discussions and practical guidance

The event also featured discussions on sheep dipping and parasite control, providing farmers with practical guidance on protecting flock health and meeting industry best practice standards and preserving water quality by reiterating safe use of pesticides.

The event supported farmers preparing for the SFS, with attendees eligible to claim two hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), helping fulfil the Universal Action (UA4) learning and development requirement.

NFU Cymru Livestock Board member Rob Powell of Blaenbwch farm explains:
“Events like these are incredibly valuable, providing farmers with the opportunity to learn from one another, share experiences and explore new approaches to farming.

With the introduction of the SFS and the emphasis on CPD, there has never been a more important time for farmers to engage with industry experts and peers to exchange knowledge, build confidence and help drive a resilient, productive, sustainable and successful future for Welsh agriculture. We are also most grateful to Wynnstay for their support.”

Growing demand for practical advice

Bryn Hughes, of Wynnstay, said: "It was fantastic to welcome more than 300 farmers to Blaenbwch Farm and to see such strong engagement throughout the day.

There is a growing demand for practical advice that supports both productive and sustainable farming systems. At Wynnstay, we are committed to helping farmers navigate change by providing expert technical support, trusted products and on-farm solutions that deliver real value.

Events like this are an important opportunity to share knowledge, discuss emerging challenges and ensure farmers have the confidence and information they need to build resilient businesses for the future."
