Farmers across Mid Wales are being invited to attend a free open day focused on sustainable farming practices, soil health and integrated pest management, taking place on Wednesday 21 October 2026 at Blaenbwch, Maesmynis near Builth Wells.

The event is being delivered through a collaboration between NFU Cymru and Wynnstay, bringing together industry experts to provide practical advice and guidance for farmers currently participating in, or considering joining, the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS).

Expert-led sessions

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a range of topics including grassland management, herbal leys, soil sampling, integrated pest management (IPM), watercourse protection and rodent control. The event will combine field-based demonstrations with indoor presentations, providing practical insights that can be applied directly on farm.

The afternoon programme will include guided visits to view herbal leys and soil sampling techniques, alongside expert-led sessions on selecting the correct seed varieties, improving soil health and implementing effective IPM measures. Farmers will also receive information on how these activities align with Sustainable Farming Scheme requirements and available support options.

Practical on-farm event

Speaking ahead of the event, Stella Owen, County Adviser for Brecon and Radnor and Monmouthshire at NFU Cymru, said:

"This event is designed to provide practical, on-farm knowledge that farmers can take away and use immediately. Working alongside Wynnstay allows us to bring together technical expertise and real-life farm examples to help support farmers as they prepare for future opportunities within the Sustainable Farming Scheme."

Two hours CPD

Farmers attending the event will also be eligible to receive two hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) recognition, with certificates issued following attendance. Registration details will require a Customer Reference Number (CRN) to streamline the certification process.

The event will begin with registration from 1.30pm, with sessions running throughout the afternoon before closing at 5pm. Burgers and refreshments will be provided. In the event of adverse weather, activities will move indoors, ensuring the full programme can still be delivered.
