Ceredigion NFU Cymru officeholders meet Ben Lake MP

05 October 2020

Speaking after the meeting, Ceredigion NFU Cymru County Chairman, Glyn Davies said: “With both the Agriculture Bill and the Internal Market Bill now progressing through the UK parliament it was timely for us to meet with our local MP. All of this is happening at the same time as crucial negotiations on a future trade agreement with the EU, on top of the massive challenges facing the whole of government and society in tackling the Covid-19 global pandemic.

The importance of protecting the high standards of Welsh farming in any future trade deals was highlighted by Ceredigion NFU Cymru County Officeholders during a recent meeting with Ben Lake, MP for Ceredigion.

“We emphasised to Ben Lake the need for the UK Government to do everything in its power to secure as free and frictionless a trade agreement as is possible to make with the EU. We also highlighted our strongly held belief that food products, imported into the UK as part of any future trade deals, should meet or exceed the production standards that are already adhered to by UK farmers. MPs can help by supporting amendments to the Agriculture Bill, which would ensure that our high domestic standards for food safety, animal welfare and environmental care are upheld, and not undermined in future trade deals.”

Mr Davies added: “The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss many other issues of importance to Ceredigion farmers, including the need for more fairness in milk supply contracts, difficulties in the wool sector as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the impacts of bovine TB on farming families in the county.

“I’m grateful to Ben Lake for taking the time to meet with us and it was good to hear his perspective on what’s happening in Westminster at this crucial time for our industry, and for the whole country. The decisions that will be made by the UK Government over the next few months will be critical for the future of Welsh farming and for our rural communities in Ceredigion.”
