NFU Cymru members in Mid-Gwynedd gathered at Pant Du Vineyard, Penygroes, on 29 January for the county’s annual conference, with a clear focus on how science, research and innovation can support the future of Welsh agriculture.

The main presentation was delivered by Professor Prysor Williams, farmer and lecturer at Bangor University, who provided a detailed and practical insight into the environmental and commercial pressures facing the industry, alongside the opportunities emerging through research and technology.

Drawing on his experience as farm manager at Henfaes Research Farm, Professor Williams highlighted how research farms must lead by example, demonstrating how commercial food production can sit alongside habitat management and environmental delivery.

Carbon and financial efficiency

He outlined a wide range of projects currently underway at Henfaes, including work on soil carbon, mixed species leys, slurry separation, ammonia emissions in sheep systems and international research examining maize production under plastic and the subsequent impact on microplastics in soils.

Professor Williams also stressed that carbon and financial efficiency must go hand in hand and that independent, robust research remains essential to support farmers and provide the evidence needed to shape future policy and markets.

The evening also included an address from the outgoing NFU Cymru President Aled Jones, who reflected on eight years of service and the development of the Sustainable Farming Scheme, while emphasising the continued need for strong political engagement to secure a fair future for family farms.

Speaking after the conference, Mid-Gwynedd NFU Cymru County Chair Trefor Parry said: “Professor Williams delivered an extremely thought-provoking and informative presentation, clearly showing how research and practical farming can work together to support a resilient and productive future for Welsh agriculture. It was also a privilege for members to hear from Aled Jones as his term of President draws to a close and to thank him for his leadership and commitment to farmers across Wales.”

The conference concluded with members reflecting on the importance of collaboration, innovation and strong scientific evidence in helping Welsh farming respond to the challenges and opportunities ahead.
