If you use a level crossing with access to cross by phone call, please note that Network Rail has informed us there is potential for disruption over the next six months.

Network Rail has informed the union that the recent vote by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Trade Union (RMT) Union to take strike action means there is potential for disruption from the 21 June and over the next six months, to the way you use these types of level crossings.

The strike action may result in your phone call requesting permission to cross the railway going unanswered. For your safety, Network Rail will be implementing a secondary process with additional instructional messaging (either a sticker or small sign/poster) close to the yellow telephone at these crossings. Please follow the below process before using the second number:

  • Call the signaller as per your usual process
  • If there is no answer, please make a second call to the number provided on the additional notice at the yellow phone box
  • A recorded message will inform you if it is safe to cross or will provide you with a further instruction.

Trains still running

Please remember that trains can still be running even if your call is unanswered. Do not cross the tracks unless you have been instructed that it is safe to do so. Please follow these additional instructions for your own safety.

Who to call

If you have any questions about this secondary process, you can call the 24-hour Network Rail helpline on 03457 11 41 41.
