This December marks the ninth annual #BuyMyTurkey Day and NFU and NFU Cymru are inviting families across the country to make locally produced British poultry the star of their festive celebrations.

Turkey producers are championing the benefits of choosing a whole bird – not only are they a gorgeous centrepiece for the Christmas table, but they are also great value for money and create plenty of delicious meals from the leftovers. Producers are encouraging shoppers to buy direct from local farms using the NFU’s Turkey Finder or ask their local butcher where their birds are from.

NFU Cymru Poultry Group Chair Richard Williams said: “Christmas is all about bringing people together and British turkey farmers are proud to play a part in that tradition. #BuyMyTurkey Day is a celebration of all the skill and dedication that goes into producing high-quality food. It is also a reminder that by choosing British, the public are supporting farming families and rural communities across the country.

“This year we want to highlight the connection between the farm gate and the festive table. A whole turkey is not only a fantastic centrepiece, but also a sustainable choice at a time when many families may be keeping an eye on spending. It is versatile, nutritious and perfect for creating meals well beyond Christmas Day.

“Our Turkey Finder tool makes it easy to find your local producers and buy the perfect bird for your celebrations. If you’re buying from your butcher, ask if the turkey is British and which farm it’s been sourced from. For supermarket shoppers, make sure to look for the Red Tractor logo and the Union flag to ensure you’re serving a great tasting British bird for your meal.

“Don’t miss out on the chance to make your Christmas dinner extra special this year, while backing British and Welsh farming.”
