NFU Cymru has had its question ‘what does Welsh farming mean to you?’ answered in the form of hundreds of photographs taken of Wales, its landscapes and farming practices.
The question was part of a competition ran by NFU Cymru prior to the Royal Welsh Show, where entrants were asked to submit photographs of what Welsh farming meant to them, under five key themes; We Are Feeding a Nation, We Are Supporting Tourism, We Are Enhancing the Environment, We Are Boosting the Economy and We are the Heart of Rural Life. These themes underpin NFU Cymru’s overarching campaign, #WeAreWelshFarming.
NFU Cymru President, John Davies, who judged the competition, was overwhelmed by the volume of entries received, he said: “A task I thought would be fairly straightforward has resulted in hours of deliberation. The photographs that have been entered really do show the true scale of work taking place on farms across Wales; work that is helping to feed our ever growing population, work that is enhancing our wildlife and biodiversity, work that is helping to retain jobs in rural Wales, work that is drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to Wales and work that ultimately personifies the heart of rural life.
“Our #WeAreWelshFarming campaign highlights all of the fantastic work carried out by Welsh farmers, and through this competition we want to bring all of that fantastic work together in one place so that visitors to the NFU Cymru/NFU Mutual stand at this year’s Royal Welsh Show can be left in no doubt whatsoever as to the important contribution made by our industry.
“Thank you to everyone who submitted photographs into this competition. I had a tough task but it was one I thoroughly enjoyed doing. With much negativity in the industry it’s nice to take a step back and remind ourselves all of the great work that we as farmers are doing for the whole of Wales which ticks every wellbeing goal set by Welsh Government.”
The final three photographs for each of the five categories are being exhibited in the NFU Cymru/NFU Mutual marquee for the duration of the Royal Welsh Show and will be seen by thousands of visitors to the stand, including politicians, stakeholders, key decision makers and members of the public.
John Davies announced the winners of each of the categories during his opening speech at the NFU Cymru breakfast reception on Monday of the show and each winner will receive a £50 farm shop voucher/produce.
The winners of each category were:
We Are Feeding a Nation – Guto Jones
We Are Supporting Tourism- Elizabeth Lewis

We Are Boosting the Economy – Gwen Price
