All wild birds in Wales have legal protection. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 also establishes the framework under which NRW may issue licences allowing the killing and taking of wild birds through General and Specific Licences. NRW is now reviewing their approach to the issuing of licences for the shooting and trapping of wild birds, building on earlier work in 2019 which resulted in significant changes.
