All the county is classified as a Less Favoured Area, dominated by the Rhinogydd, Arenig and Cadair Idris mountain ridges.
The county has extensive areas of common land with blanket bog as the dominant vegetation. Meirionnydd is a popular tourist area, with attractive towns, mountain walks and coastal beaches. Coed-y-Brenin (Forest of the King), Ganllwyd is one of the largest and oldest forestry commission plantations in Britain.
