A taste of farm life

23 Mar 2010
Schoolchildren from Llanfynydd County Primary School, Flintshire, visited Trimley Hall Farm yesterday (Monday 22 March), to learn about how and where food is produced.

Thanks to NFU Cymru member and local farmer George Jones, the youngsters had an opportunity to walk round his mixed beef and sheep farm while learning about food production and sustainable food issues. Farm-visit

Mr Jones has been hosting school farm visits for years, he said, “As a school governor and a farmer I feel it is vital that children are given every opportunity to experience the countryside at first hand. We as farmers are increasingly concerned at the lack of connection felt by families with the origin of their food and this is why I host these events.

“Children can learn a lot from the practical first hand experience and visits like this ensure that the food and farming sector is at the forefront of supporting learning outside the classroom. I hope they benefited from their visit and that they are now more educated about where food comes from.”

Mr Morgan, Llanfynydd CP School Senior Teacher, said, “Farm visits provide an invaluable way of demonstrating the way land and animals are managed to produce healthy nutritious food. Today was about providing opportunities so that schoolchildren can have high quality learning experiences outside the classroom.”

To end the day every pupil was given a pack of NFU Cymru salad seeds so that they can go home and start growing their own produce.
